Overview

This article explains how to fix a printer connection on Mac OS X in which jobs get paused and are listed as "On Hold (Authentication required)". This most often happens on non-Active Directory bound Macs after users have changed their AD passwords.

Actions

Printer connections on non-Active Directory bound Macs require that you authenticate (aka log in) to the print server at some point, generally the first time they send a print job. Users often choose to store their name and password in their "keychain" to avoid having to log in each time they send a print job.

Under some circumstances, a print job sent will pause and display a Status of "On Hold (Authentication Required)" (see below).

OS X unbound SMB printing on hold

This most commonly happens if the user has stored their name (NetID) and AD password in their "keychain" for this printer connection and then changes their AD password.

In order to resume the print job, you can either click "Resume" or double-click on the paused print job in the window for the printer connection (see above). Then you can reauthenticate to the print server, by entering uofi\NetID for "Name" and your AD password for "Password" (see below).

OS X SMB print auth

As indicated in the above graphic, you may check the box next to "Remember this password in my keychain" to have your computer remember your name and password so that you don't have to log in to the print server each time you send a job. If you select this option, next time you change your password you will have to repeat these steps.
